Another new owner - must be mad! Gearbox question

Hello folks.
I've just acquired an early 73? 2.3l Autosleeper with rising roof. Body work in very solid condition but paintwork poor. Original interior in reasonable condition.
I'll be signing up for full membership shortly & will post some pictures as I restore/pimp it.
A few immediate requests for help;
1. The gear lever is incredibly loose. It flaps about all over the place i.e. about 6 inches of movement in any gear. It selects gears smoothly but I'm sure the wobbling can't be right. Is there a resistance spring broken somewhere? I have the original Vauxhall service training manuals inc the gearbox one but I can't see anything relating to this.
2. Can you help me decode the VIN plate? I have
9730CY611847 DOM 073699
7BL 359 378 441 503 523
536 541 573 922
I've worked out some of them from other posts. Admins - any chance of a sticky post of the codes if you have them?
3. Has anyone got a contact who can provide a definitive manufacturing date? I've googled everywhere and can't find anyone that can do this for Vauxhalls.
The registration date is 31/3/73 but it would have to have been converted before that, so although the C code indicates 1973 for manufacture it may be borderline for free tax.

Incidentally, got around 30mpg on a long trip back with it. Thrashed it a bit as well!

many thanks
Tony

Update

Mis-remembered what was going on with the gear stick.
In NEUTRAL it waves about all over the place and you can easily select reverse by mistake.
Once in gear there's about a 2 inch circle of movement.
