Battery light stays on....

Hi all

Took my leisure battery out for a charge, when i put it back in it did'nt work (even with engine running, which has never happened before), so i recharged it for longer and it seems ok. However, after sorting that little problem out, i now have a battery light that stays lit on the dash (for main battery). Could the cause of this be linked to leisure change? I also have intermitent starter issues.

Your advice would be gratefully recieved.

Thanks

Hi
Have you checked all or any fuses , my leisure battery, I have two of them are hooked up through a relay that is used when charging from the zig unit I have installed, each battery is fused on the inlet side of the positive so overcharge doesn't occur, these are 35amp inline fuses, I have also a 40amp fuse between these as well at the relay.
Somehow when the fuses pop, because I have started my van up the fuses blow if I forget to unplug the mains hook up as there are two charging sytems fighting each other, one from the alternator the other from the zig unit, this also affects the 3rd vehicle battery that starts the engine when the fuses blow.

hope this helps,

Have you checked fluid levels in the battery?
If you have an older Zig unit, the switch that selects between the vehicle or leisure batter cannot be set to 'neither', meaning the indicator stays on all the time, thus draining the battery over time. It is possible to change the switch to a 3 way, allowing you to isolate both from the domestic side of the van when parked up.
Whenever Im hooked up to the mains, I put a big orange tag on the steering wheel, but thats more to stop me driving away and causing physical damage to my van or someones hookup!

You need to find out whats wrong with your alternator.

The charging light not going off tell you that the alternator is not charging ,

Ether fit a replacement or get yours repaired.

Once you have a working alternator you can then find out why your second battery is not charging.

Make sure that you have either a split charge relay or something like a Zig unit to charge your second battery..

might be as simple as the alternator needing tightening if its slipped on its bracket- check the tension on the belt....

Hello again everyone
I dont think my leisure battery is charging.
Ive tried it with a voltmeter and its on a constant 12.7 volts until I start turning on the lights and so on. Then the voltage drops and does not increase even when I flick the switch over on the dash it doesnt make any difference.
However the battery that starts up the van goes from 12.65v to 13.5v when the switch is flicked back .
I dont know where to begin to check everything as the leisure battery runs through a relay when its supposed to be being charged.

Hello again
Can anyone remember seeing a diagram posted on the boards of how the leisure battery should be wired up through a relay?
I'm sure someone posted a diagram (unless I dreamt it)

Thanks in anticipation.

There's various ways of wiring a split charge system. In order of cost there's a 2-relay setup using ordinary 30A 4- or 5-pin relays, voltage sensing, dedicated relay (e.g. Lucas SRB600 series) or diode block.
