MOT

I'm taking our van in for its MOt tomorrow, Friday 23rd July, stand by for a list of parts required, and help needed.

I bought a new airfilter but its an inch to long, even after asking the bloke if it will fit my van, its made by FRAM the diameters are the same though. Thinking this must be for a CF2.

Anyway fingers crossed the mot result won't be to bad.

I've had to run a wire from the dipped beam on the off side to the nearside light as for some reason the N/S headlight stopped working, can this be left like this or do they need to be independent of each other, it should be enough to get through the mot.

that is good enough - the light only has to be working and aimed correctly to pass .. pretty much regardless of how it's wired up

Have a look at the fusebox after the MoT test: if the dodgy headlamp comes back on when its fuse is disturbed then the clips & fuse end caps may need cleaning.

Another source of problems is the bulkhead connector between the bonnet hinge & wing, to the left when viewed from the front. Wobbling the plug with blue+red cables in its bundle can sort a poor connection between the terminals inside. If a stable connection can't be had then the plug & socket terminals may need cleaning: do this with the battery disconnected because all brown cables in the vicinity are 'live'.

Thanks Phil, as it happens I'll have all weekend to play with it, as the bl***dy thing wouldn't start so couldn't get it to the mot centre.
Was working perfect last night, starting first time every time until this morning.
Van frightened going to the mot centre incase he came back terminal.

Apart from a box of matches, any ideas.

have got the battery on charge at the moment as drained the battery trying to start it.

Booked in for mot on monday now.

I am not a happy bunny today

A guess: fusebox &/or bulkhead connector might be responsible for an ignition supply fault as well as headlamp fault. Ignition supply cables are white from fuse 3 to coil terminal 15 (+) & starter motor solenoid IGN (cold start) terminal.

Usual symptom is no (or weak) spark at the coil HT lead & it's a supply fault when there's plenty of zap from the coil when a jumper lead from the battery + is connected to coil terminal 15.

After a full battery charge, he started first time, so looks like my van likes a fully charged battery to start.

Note to self, put battery on charge sunday night so I can get to the mot station monday.

Should have done this at the start of the blog.

A few pics of some of the preparation work before the Mot.

Rusty headlamp, so removed and took the old out.

Whilst they are out, it gave me access to the rest of the rusty bits, so with wire brush got to work de rusting, luckily all rust was only surface rust.

with the headlamps removed, it made easier access to the rusty bits in the engine space behind the lights.

Then it started to rain, so a make shift garage was erected.

Surface rust taken care of on the bonnet.

Front wheel not looking particularly good.

same goes for thr rear wheels.

Even jules got stuck in, polishing the outside. in between rain.

Still, since not making to the mot today, it gives us time to do some more bits and pieces before Monday.

Spent a couple of hours this morning chasing wires, for my headlamp fault and came across this switch, I can only presume from its hidden location, it was a DIY immobiliser switch of some kind fitted by a previous owner.

[b]Top tip[b], if like me your chasing wires to see where they go, once you know what they are and go to, label them.

If you fit anything new to your van and add wiring, label it as well, not only for you to remember, but if you ever sell your van, it gives the new owner a fighting chance when things go wrong for them.

D Day has arrived

Last night started him, and fired up first turn of the key, super I thought, and locked him up for the night.

Got up early this morning as I had to go and get a number plate light bulb, got back and fired him up, nothing but the whirr of the starter motor.

A few expletives were exchanged between me and the van, and began looking for that box of matches.

after a calming coffee and cigarette, I put the battery back on charge.

waited an hour and tried again, still not starting.

Found the box of matches by this time.

1045 is mot test time, time now 1028, last ditch attempt time. loosened the nuts on the distributor and twisted it around a couple of millimetres, tried him again, a few coughs this time, but not firing, another 2 mm twist to the left, tried him again and fired up first time, wooo hooooooo. engine back off, do up the bolts on the dissy, time now 1032, should just make it.

As i'm pulling the extension bar and socket out and away from the dissy, the socket fell of and dropped in between the timing belt cover, a lot of expletives and now its started to rain, so under the van looking for the socket, getting dirty oily and now wet, time now 1038, found the socket, now trying to poke it out with a screw driver and long nose pliers, finally got it out, 1040 now, threw the tools in the back bonnet down and just as I was beginning to turn the key, I dared it not to start.

Luckily he started, in gear and vroooomm, were of at warp factor minus 7.

First set of traffic lights red, ok, keep calm, next set red and so it went, taxi drivers on mobile phones driving slow so theyt can juggle driving with talking, well at least the horn will pass the MOT lol.

got to the test station at 1057, parked him up and now waiting for the result.

Will post the results as soon as I have them, stand by for a list of parts required, I wont be needing a horn though lol

Got a phone call at 15.47

ELVIS failed

Only minor fails though.
1) O/S headlight aiming to high
2) emmissions to high
3) Welding required on one of the out riggers.

So well pleased with that, there goin to charge me £50 for the welding and realign the headlmamp and do the emmissions for free.

The headlamp only failed cos i installed new lights and had no way to reset the aim at home, and teh emmissions failed cos I had to adjust the dissy this morning to get him started.

So all my pre-mot checking and repairing prior to his big day paid off.

So next job is to get him to wales for an LPG conversion early August, do a bit of sight seeing and get along to some meets, deffo will be at blackpool lights at peel hill farm, will see if I can time the LPG conversion with the meet near birmingham.

Now that's what I call an excellent result Especially seeing as he was plotted up for so long.....notwithstanding the amount of work you put in to getting him through!!!!!!

Elvis WILL sing again!!!!

Just to finish this blog of.

Picked up Elvis from the mot centre yesterday evening, all done and a full 12 months MOT.

Not bad after years of being parked up in my back garden.

just checking all the 12 volt and 240 volt wiring now, and the plumbing, just to ensure everything else is still working as it should.

Will see who ever is going to the Blackpool lights meet this year.
