Rear Door Problems

My rear back door (with lock handle) is slowly falling to pieces. It's been making a hell of a lot of noise whilst driving and a few days ago i couldn't even open it. Long story short the bottom latch broke and fell into the rear of the cab, jamming it shut. Upon further inspection i noticed the metal bit on the top of the door frame (the bit that the door buffers rest on) is broken off. This explains why the door has been making so much noise and thus resulted in a broken rear latch.

I've uploaded some pictures here for you to have a gander (first four photos):

Anyone know where i can pick up a new latch and metal door plate thing? The noise of the rear door is driving me and my girlfriend a little crazy (imagine a continual high pitched squeak with loud shunting). It's also a little unnerving, watching it jump up and down in the door frame whilst driving.

Thanks very much
Kevin

Just found this on ebay. Correct latch, looks about right?

Ebay latch is the right one. At that price it's worth looking for the threaded stem that's come out of yours...

The top striker plate will need sorting first though; without something top & bottom for the rubber buffers to wedge against the door still will bounce. Plate should repair: there's room to lap weld a buffer strip on to mirror the one at the other end.

Erk. Go metal detecting..?

A welding magnet (or on from a loudspeaker) might pick it up.

On that topic, one of the handiest things I have is the toner distributor magnet from an old photocopier I had the opportunity to take apart some years ago. A simple metal bracket on the end of a broom pole with some little wheels nicked of a toy pram (broken first- honest) is great for trundling along the drive and finding lost nuts, bolts, washers and screws- even picked up a spanner once! Certainly gives peace of mind for healthy tyres!

If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all..

Assuming the threaded rod turns up, the trick to get the adjustment right is to leave the link rod disconnected then screw in the rod to lift the latch against its spring until the latch works smoothly (other door left open meanwhile or you'll lock yourself out!). Latch has to be unscrewed from the door to fit the link rod but once the adjustment is right the rod should lift the latch ok.

Spent a few good hours out there now with no luck, although i did find a few other bits and bobs. Just bit the bullet and purchased the steeply priced ebay door latch while it's still there. Ouch!

Now you have bought the part, the original will turn up quite unexpectedly!

I had to add some washers to the top latch and roof plate thing to space it out in order to get the latch and plate to correspond properly. The latch just wasn't popping into the roof plate (in fact it was miles off)! Probably explains why the plate broke off in the first place. Just about managed to get it to lock properly now though so hopefully it'll do the job. We'll just have to see if it pops out whilst driving around.

Fingers crossed it has done it. Cheers once again folks!

Turned out the top latch never engaged into the roof plate. I have no idea why this is. I lowered the plate as much as possible and lifted the top latch but still wasn't enough? Had to make some modifications to the plate in the end so it all fit nice and secure:

All sorted now, no more bleeding ears!

Top plate is the wrong way round: latches should engage with the rods. I'll take a photo of mine when it's not persisting down.

Oops!

Not tried to move the top striker plate on mine yet -

It's still got the original ramps for the sprung buffers. Also, the left side door doesn't have a top latch & although it had a tower bolt screwed on when I got the van - removed because it rattled too much! - it's never had a top latch (van is 1986).

Previous owner of my van cut the top plate in half and added a nut and bolt either side of this, allowing individual adjustment to suit each back door - still rattle like hell mind you...
