Rae's New Van Arrived in Norfolk at 9am on 19th March to collect the new van. Waved goodbye to my driver, handed over the cheque, dashed to the Post Office to get the road tax and was about to set off when the seller informed me that the speedo was 5-15 miles out of callibration: I thought 'that's a strange time to tell me'.Made my way to Southend as planned, wiper blade blew off. Two days in Southend, then returned home. Travelled over night when it started to rain, dipped beam was next to useless, put on full beam, after 10 mins, strange smell of bacolite & headlights started to flicker on & off, so had to do the journey in very poor visibility. Got home. Got up this morning & started to wash the van, noticed a gap in the rear window rubbers where water had started to get in. Removed the panel from inside the shower unit to find a soaking wet van. A few pictures of what I found:
Picture 1 shows you the hole & the black bits are the wood that crumbled in my hands; notice the rotten crossmember. Picture 2 shows the gap between the window rubber & the body: that's after I've tried to put it back in. Can't blame Debroy, it was my choice to buy the vehicle but because there was interest shown when I was buying it, thought it only fair to let everyone know the outcome. OMG.........what a dissapointment, hope you are able to put it to rights. I know the feeling when you feel someone else is going to buy what you think is a great van.....only to discover problems. Wishing you good luck. Margaret ---------------------- |

Oh goodness - what a disappointment. When I met him I thought he seemed really genuine, maybe he didn't realise the floor was like that? You seem pretty knowledgable Rae so I hope you sort the problem without too much hassle. Is it worthwhile challenging him over it and get some pennies back for the work that needs doing?

Let's hope that floor rot isn't too extensive, Rae. Do you think that broken crossmember is alowing the rubber gap to appear... or maybe the glass is too small?

Hi Rae I hope things turn out for you as I know how long you have been looking forward to having your van. I had the same Problem with a burning light switch so I brought a replacement switch and then saw another at the same show so brought 2. anyway I know you have the other van to use for parts but if its a 2 stage pull switch and you need one let me know and I will send you the other one it should plug straight in hopefully. ---------------------- |

Relays and headlamps of your choice should fix that prob (have a pair of sealedbeam jobs spare if necessary and bought a job lot of relays for the same problem!)- rear windows o landcruisers are bent to the wrong radius in all cases- Im getting ready eventually to make up a bending jig to make the right ones- but.. the good news is that its dead easy to remove the furniture, unbolt the floor and use the old one to make a template- but... getting it out the back door can be fun! Get Marine ply and roll on bitumen paint after a good dosing of preservative! The brochure youve got was one i printed off this website! One thing I want to do that Debroy did was to use chrome filler for the back window seals- very cool! Another thought- whilst you have the floor off, its a cracking opportunity to get the chassis stripped and resealed! Doncha just love opportunitism? Also check if the old open cell foam is still filling the gaps between the floor and the walls- I replaced this with filler foam which doesnt hold moisture in quite the same way! Hell, youve got a good looking van- but you dindnt expect perfection did you? Another point- I just acquired a new back door- they have a design fault that often results in stress cracks around the bottom hinge- I cant remember if yours is affected yet, but if not, its worth adding some reinforcement with steel plate and more fibreglass to reduce the threat! Will be posting pic eventually of my new doors preparation. And if your rooflights ever need replacing, Ive made a yoke and former which makes some pretty dandy replacements- pick the colour you like! (originally they were orange, but fade over time and get brittle). Hope this helps! ---------------------- |

Thanks for everyone's concern. Licked my wounds & got on with it this morning. Took the shower compartment out completely, cut the floor back to good wood then cut the replacement piece of wood to fit: this will not be put in properly until I sort the leak in the window.

Bloody hell. Hi Rea,What a bloody nasty shock to get, just when you think you've found a good van, makes you wish the cheque was still in the post eh. The van I bought needed a fair bit of work but most of it I was expecting due to the price I paid. Doug. ---------------------- |

Perhaps the leaky window was assisted by the shower? mind, no standing room anyway! ---------------------- |

Sealant. Hi Rea,I have just done my roof with a sealant I was told about by a guy I know who works for Wick's of all outfits, because I had two leaks that I could not find let alone stop. And because it has now been raining for the last two days non stop I checked this morning and by god it works, I will find the tin and put the name up it may be some help to you. Doug. ---------------------- |

Today's task? Try to make the back window fit properly as it was hanging out.
To my dismay, when I started looking for the leaks, I found two large cracks; bad enough for the water to gain access.
Took the window out as it wasn't sealing properly.
Window back in: won't be happy until I repair the damaged areas. Hopefully it will stop raining. Now I'm concentrating on the light switch. Rae & Ann ---------------------- |
