hardened valve seats

maybe a quick one- is having hardened valve seats fitted the only think required to run on unleaded without additives? how much does it cost? presumably the cost of buying lead replacement additives (not to mention the momentary hassle) is eventually covered by the cost of having it done... and if you have hardened valve seats, will this avoid the need for flashlube if you decide to run on lpg? and another one- presumably the cost for getting them done is increased by the machine setup... might it be worth seeing how many members would want to get it done if we could have a batch done by one company who could set up and be tooled for a batch job? can anyone give an idea of prices? it seems to me that this is the sort of thing that we as a club have might and power over..? is this my second good idea ive had or should i get my coat?

If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all..

Your soft valve seats (what the engine left the factory with) will eventually wear out, even if you could get leaded gasoline. How soon this will happen depends on your driving style and use of additives or not. If you only drive slowly for the fun of it on Sundays, it won't be a problem anytime soon. If you race up and down the country daily, it will come up sooner than you think.

When the soft valve seats wear out, you'll need a valve-seat-job anyway.. So this is the best time to have hardened valve seats fitted. I would think it is rather wasteful to install them before your existing ones give in. You won't gain much by installing them beforehands. The hardened valve seats will eventually wear out too, but should last much longer than the soft ones, and the wear rate would only depend on your driving style as additives won't help much.

A price indication would be about 25-30 pounds per valve. I don't think it is a job that would greatly benefit from batch orders. It is pretty much a manual job, can't really automate it. What would be good though is to find a machine shop that knows what they're doing and have loads of experience of CF heads and try to get a discount for members to all go there. Experience is good, so they know what materials to use for the seat inserts and how to best do the job (how deep to grind, etc).

I'm not that knowledgeable on LPG, but I would think that with hardened valve seats you don't need any kind of additives.

I personally would only get this done when my valve seats are no longer doing what valve seats should be doing.
