The value of our vans I too am a trawler of ebay as I love looking at all the different shapes and sizes of our vans. One thing that has struck me over the last month is the price Bedfords are fetching. The coachbuilt ones are getting well over 1000 pounds and the pop ups and high tops all scrapping around that figure too. For me, our van is worth more than it would fetch on the 'open' market I'm sure, but I do feel quite pleased that our vans are getting the price they deserve and are no longer the 'bargin basement' of the camper world. I'm sure the success of our club and all you helpful chaps out there are all adding that extra value to our machines. The fact that so many are being saved from the scrap yard is fantastic too. Long live the Beddies

Dont we all keep an eye on values? It seems that condition is all important along with mot. A rough beddie cf looks still low 100's while Char's and the South African could go to £4000, with the rest of us somewhere in between.
Except maybe the one on Gethin's avatar! ---------------------- |

Personally, I tend to have a slightly different opinion... I don't ever plan on selling my Beddie. I get unnaturally attached to vehicles, if I've done extreme long-distance driving in them. So to me, the financial value is more of a loss, instead of a gain. For a start, I had to buy it! Then, I will have to keep on buying spares for the forseeable future... Some would probably mean I might need a whole Beddie that has already somehow died and can donate vital organs.. But if prices skyrocket, spare prices will skyrocket too, and I'll have trouble keeping him on the road. The more expensive spares get, the more I have to replace parts with different, cheaper ones, or make my own from scratch if at all possible. Also, the more expensive they get, the more of a risk there is for someone to want to steal him. If they're worth nothing, nobody would like to steal it and I could have three more vans worth of spares in my garage waiting to be used. I plan on using Beddie for overlanding. Ultimate goal is to drive to the USA through Siberia, which will not happen anytime soon... But it gives you an idea of how long I'd like to keep him for and how far I'd like to drive... So I WILL need cheap spares.. I really can't see any benefit from prices going up. If for whatever reason I could not keep Beddie any longer, I would probably give him to the most caring Bedhead I could find for free. But this will probably be on my will after I die, or the last thing I do before I die. |

Been reading this article with interest. A Bedford is only worth what you're willing to pay for it. For myself, finding a good Mk1 Landcruiser was a nigh on impossible task & I was prepared to travel the length of Britain to find the right one; in fact, we travelled a 760 mile round trip, in 24hrs, just to look at one. The seller certainly knew what he had & what it was worth & the price reflected that. The man had had it for 5 yrs, it had been regularly serviced by a garage, it had a certified gas conversion, overdrive gearbox & was only used for 6 months of the year: it pushed all the right buttons for me. I, too, keep my vehicles for a long time & do high mileage. For me, this was more of a long term commitment than a money making deal. Rae & Ann ---------------------- |

Van Value Hi AllBrief Summary of my Bedford CF2 Autosleeper value: A piece of British (with GM American) Motoring History - £2000 maybe Its my Cottage/Bed & Breakfast/Hotel anywhere I wish to stay (wildcamping included) - £Priceless (Photos to prove it) £? Its still going after 100,000 miles and 25 years, is a pleasure to drive, is simple to maintain (most of the time) £? No other vehicle generally where Motorhomescampers are concerned has lasted so long at such a reasonable price to buy and maintain (my brother has has had a classic VW for a few years - unbelievable expense!!) So - £0 I would find it hard to value the pleasure we have had from our Beddie - in the last 4 years from weekend breaks to 10 day holidays. Cheers Dave

Pete. H wrote: To true Rae, and how is the new bus, Don't know Pete, don't get the van until the end of the month. Ann & myself really looking forward to it. It's going to feel strange driving a Bedford with a Bedford engine in it. Never used petrol/gas before but we pick it up in Norfolk then we're going down to my mum's in Southend-on-Sea, then shooting back over to see Wee Pete's before returning to Scotland. Then I can give you an opinion on it. Rae & Ann ---------------------- |

Hit the nail on the head there Dave. We go to see my old mum at least 5 times a year, she stays in a residential home in the middle of Southend. In the off season it's #25 per night B&B. As I come from that area, I know exactly where to park, so normally, I wake up in the morning with a beautiful view of the Thames. The rest of the year, we wild camp; as Scotland is the lap of the gods for wild camping. Throw in a few Bedford meets, steam rallies, vintage rallies & a few local shindigs...priceless! After reading this I thought I'd let you know a little about our Betty. Bought her almost a year ago. Traveled from Glasgow to Wales to buy a virtually blind purchase (Lesley Ann saw I was watching it on e bay and bidded). Well a new radiator and still saving up to replace the box as it has certainly seen better days and we are still going strong. The plan is to do a tour of cornwall north youks and finishing in Dumfries & galloway. I know we will keep spending on Betty. More of a relationship than a van.

Someone's idea of immaculate could be completely different from yours, doesn't mean to say they are misleading you, it's just how it is. I have certainly been to quite a few viewings & just had to walk away. Hope to see you soon. Rae & Ann ---------------------- |

When looking for our Bedouin, the prime criteria for me was 'originality'. I wasn't too worried about the condition of the body - it was more the fact that the interior had to be as complete as possible. The number of Bedouins that had been changed internally was astounding!!! As it was, we found ours - laid up for 12 years in a barn - completely original except for the colour..... Yes, it is rusty. Yes it has dents in the aluminium - but these can all be rectified. You try finding original 'photo-printed' hardboard that the furniture was made from back in the early '70's!!!! Other than the general condition, the only things I can find missing inside are the two metal 'stirrups' that slot in either side adjacent to the windows and support the outer ends of the hammock/bunk. All else is there.... (btw - if anyone has a pair of these going spare......?????) My god I cant wait to get stuck in to the resto............ Value??? Does it matter??? (other than for insurance..) It seems that there are some restored, modified, or very well maintained examples around above the 4K mark, but how rare are they compared to the majority around? ---------------------- |

I keep meaning to post these pics of your new van Rae. We 'met' her in Mablethorpe last year. The guy was really chatty and we sat inside where he showed us brochures and pics. It was lovely.

What a beauty!! Lucky you!! Awesome condition. Well, generally there's the CF's owned by Bedheads, who go a long way to maintain them and keep them in top condition, and then there's the CF's owned by people who don't even remember it's a Bedford if they're not looking at the badge, and these are usually rotboxes with horribly unmaintained mechanical parts and wrongly wired electrics that rarely (if ever) work. Bedheads usually sell them more expensive, but they know what they're selling and they usually have quite a bit to say, whereas the others just put up an ad saying "bedfor van quick sale 40 quid no timewasters no mot no tax no engine but drives well"...! |
