I think the Bosch dizzy came in around 1982ish, so you're looking for late X or Y reg onwards . You'll know as soon as you look at the engine, it'll have the 2.3 slant and the orange capped Dizzy.
Make sure you get the dizzy, coil, control unit and the mounting plate from the block.

Didn't know the coolant pipes were different. My '79 van must just happen to have the later pipe as the Bosch dizzy fitted no problem.

Have you managed to fit a leccy one? If so what?,how? and where?
Or does it not really need it?

Factory fit Bosch distributor came in at chassis DV600101, 1983 production year (Delco contact breaker system finished at CV629999). Earlier ambulances are always worth a look though because I've come across a few with Bosch system (maybe retro-fitted).

My van had a Kenlowe fan already fitted just cant see it in piccy.

You will need the dizzy (the one on the left in picture with the orange cap and blue plug)and its base as in picture of engine and also the coil and module

This is all held on by 2 bolts but also get the mounting bracket from the inside of the cab, remove heater hose from drivers side then small triangular piece that attaches to heater to get at it.Remember where abouts it fit when you take it off and drill 2 holes in bulkhead to refit it in roughly the same place.

Mine was all complete and had an earth connection that fitted onto mounting bolts,i used a shake proof washer on this bolt to get a good connection to earth(fitted against bulkhead)
Then it needs a Igniton live connection onto the coil (15+ on mine),I think Phil is doing more info on this?
and that is it just needs timing (phil to the rescue on mine )Job done !!sure Phil will point out what I have missed !

Thanks for that.
I am skint at the moment but I will go back and have a look at the Ambulances in a week or two, I still havent been to see the man about a bonnet, but hopefully next week.
It would be good if we could do a section with write ups on how to do these mods and what vehicles are the best doners

Where does it mount? Only place I can logically see would be on the radiator grille side as there's no space on the engine side, even with the fixed fan removed.
Any pics?

fan

here is a picture of the kenlowe fan fitted to custard, dont know if they are still avaiable but were quite a common piece of kit in the 80's/90's
If you are looking to change to a electric fan maybe one of the modern types could be found that fit onto the rad matrix with plastic clips.Have a nosey round a scrapyard. The fan switch can usually be fitted in a 't' piece that goes in the radiator hose

Got my new speedo cable from Speedycables.com they did a great job rushing thru my order and cable was just right.Tried it up the drive and got to 10 mph so seems to be working, just see how accurate it is when I do a test run.

Phil is having a head scratch over an apparent conflict between wiring colour - white signifies un-fused ignition circuits - and CF2 ignition wiring being fused, through fuse 13 (21-fuse fusebox), yet still uses white for ignition supply.

Road test

well beddy's keep you on your toes !

on the morning of our holiday I had a few errands to run but got as far as the main road (100 meters) before custard decided she didnt want to go any further!
Stalled across road and needed a push to side of road!No spark which I thought was the coil, but Phil to the rescue again turned out it was a faulty module of the electronic ignition that I had fitted to make her more reliable!Phil had a replacement which got us under way again.

Went to Scarborough for a few days, what a diferance the 5 speed box made.No uncontorlable shaking on starting from the traffic lights(me as well as custard)no crunchy gear changes and alot quieter in the cab!It was only on the way home that we realised we had lost the annoying rattle from the gearstick that required a map book lodged between the gearstick and the engine cover to quieten!
Apart from a oil pressure problem( my fault for not keeping ontop of oil changes)she ran well and returned about 16 mpg average(coachbuilt body fully loaded on a 2.3 petrol)

The electronic ignition has made a differance to the starting and running, still only 60 mph flat out but she gets abit bouncy after that anyway! So next job is to get my spare cylinder head moddified to unleaded and add LPG !!

update

Just done 900 miles travelling to kent on holiday and the van ran great !:D

Got around 20 MPG but it was much more comfortable with the 5 speed, hill starts are not now one step forward and ten backwards!
Still have to drop down the box on hills but over all I am really pleased with the conversion.

split charge relay

Forgot to mention that i fitted the Towsure split sharge relay that was recommend on the forum, and agree its easy to fit and works well,I fitted mine in a weatherproof box as it fits underneath the van by the batteries and the original case is not weatherproof

just to let some people know.you can change the speedo drive in this gearbox...also there are 2 ratio types on this box..the 1 fitted to twin wheel transit has a lower 1st and 2nd gear its not very noticeable until fully loaded...plus there is a large plastic shroud that goes over the bell housing for a bit more sound proofing.
